In the tranquil and remote village of Kunjal, located about 15 kilometers from the renowned pilgrim town of Udupi, Karnataka, a dedicated traditional physician, Vaidya Raghunath Prabhu, embarked on an extraordinary journey in 1926. Fueled by a deep passion for Ayurveda and a pioneering spirit, he established Swadeshi Oushadha Bhandara—one of the oldest Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing units in Coastal Karnataka.
For nearly four decades, Raghunath Prabhu dedicated himself to the well-being of the people of Udupi and the surrounding taluks, earning their trust and admiration. His unwavering commitment to compassionate care and high-quality medicines gained widespread recognition, attracting patients from far and wide.
Late K. Raghunath Prabhu, a highly respected Ayurvedic Pandit, started his venture as a humble dispensary. During the pre-independence era, when modern allopathic medicine was virtually unheard of in villages like Kunjal, Ayurveda remained the trusted system of healing. With no electricity, no proper roads, and dense forests surrounding the village, Raghunath Prabhu and his devoted wife, Kamala Prabhu, worked relentlessly to serve the health needs of the community. By the glow of a simple chimney lamp, they meticulously prepared medicines, ensuring each formulation met the highest standards of care and precision.
Raghunath Prabhu’s commitment to his patients was unwavering. He upheld the highest standards of quality, meticulously preparing his own formulations without the use of modern machinery. Each ingredient was carefully chosen, measured, and processed by hand, strictly following the principles outlined in ancient Ayurvedic texts (Granthas). With no staff to assist them, Raghunath Prabhu and Kamala Prabhu personally oversaw every step of the process, ensuring that every medicine was crafted with precision and care.
Swadeshi Group, now in its 98th year of dedicated and selfless service in the promotion and practice of Ayurvedic medicine, offers over a hundred classical and proprietary formulations. Widely trusted by both esteemed professionals and the general public, it stands as a remarkable testament to genuine entrepreneurship and relentless hard work in the fields of health management and commerce.
Hartone, a proprietary product of Swadeshi Pharmaceuticals, was recognized as the Best Ayurvedic Research Product at the International Seminar on Holistic Management of Heart Diseases, held in Pune in 1999.
